Privacy policy.
Privacy policy for Squads. This document covers what data we use and how we use it.
What data we use
While using Squads, we may collect the following data:
- Location: If you enable location sharing, we share your location with other Squads users, at the level you choose for them, to help you find each other. Details below.
- Email address: If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the email address that provider gives us (including an Apple "Hide My Email" relay address if you choose one). We use it to identify your account and to reach you about your account.
- Date of birth: We ask for it once, when you set up your account, so we can check that you're at least 13. Details below.
Your date of birth
You must be at least 13 to use Squads, so we ask for your date of birth when you set up your account.
- What we collect: the birthdate you enter.
- Why: It's required for us to check your age since the app includes social features, including messaging and user-created content.
- Who sees it: no one, it's never shown to anyone else or used in the app.
- If you're under 13: the account is blocked and can't use Squads. You can still sign out or delete the account from the block screen, and you can write to support@heysquads.com if the date was entered wrong.
- Deletion: it's deleted with the rest of your account when you delete your account.
Location
When you turn on location sharing, Squads uses your phone's location to show other Squads users where you are, so you can find each other. We also use it to suggest nearby mountains. You choose who sees what, and you can turn sharing off at any time.
- Your exact location is shared only when you grant it: nobody sees your exact location unless you grant it to them, and a grant never lasts more than 24 hours. You can grant it to a specific person, to a squad you belong to, or to the participants of an Event you take part in, and you can end a grant at any time. Your exact location is never shared publicly.
- Events have a range: a grant to an Event, or to a squad while that squad has an upcoming Event, covers you only while you're within 25 miles of the Event's location. Beyond that, they see that you're out of range.
- What everyone else sees: at most the area of the resort you're at, or just the resort's name. When you're not at a resort, that's the name of a nearby town. You pick one level for your friends and one for everyone else, and people who aren't your friends can be shown nothing at all.
- No location history: we keep only your most recent location, not a history of where you've been. The one exception is that your friends' Home feed can show when you arrived at a resort. Your exact coordinates are stored only while a grant is active.
- When you stop sharing: your location is deleted as soon as you stop sharing.
- If your phone goes quiet: if your updates stop without you stopping sharing, for example because your phone loses signal, people who could see your location see it marked as last seen, with its age. It's deleted automatically one hour after your last update.
- Locations sent in chat: a location you choose to send as a chat message is shared with that conversation and stays there like any other message. The limits above don't apply to it.
What we don't do
- We never sell your data, and we don't rent, trade, or monetize it.
- No advertising trackers, no ad networks, no ad profiles, and no data brokers.
- We use exactly one third-party analytics provider — Google Analytics, on the heysquads.com website only. It is named and described under "Website analytics" below, and it is the only outside company that receives anything about your use of Squads that we chose to send.
Website analytics
The heysquads.com website uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site. It collects standard usage information, such as the pages you view, your browser and device type, and an approximate location based on your IP address. Analytics cookies are set only if you accept the banner shown on your first visit, and we don't use this data for advertising. The iOS and Android apps contain no analytics.
Data we do keep
Account info (handle, display name, email address, profile photo, hashed password if you set one, date of birth), the events you create or RSVP to, and, while you share, your most recent location (replaced on every update, and deleted when you stop sharing or one hour after your last update).
Account deletion
You can choose to delete your account at any time. In the iOS or Android app: Settings → Delete account. If you can't get into the app, email support@heysquads.com from the address on the account and we'll delete it for you. Your personal data — email address, name, profile photo, date of birth, location — is erased as soon as you confirm, and in every case within 24 hours.
